'Poverty-stricken Cairenes flocked to the so-called \'leftovers market\' in the Egyptian capital on Thursday, where they sought to buy food at reduced prices, as the holy month of Ramadan got underway. The market is set up every Thursday and it gives poor Cairenes the opportunity to afford buying the necessary goods for lower prices, which have been disposed of by factories, hotels and groceries. \"At the start of the day, the prices are high and we can not pay for the goods. So we go down to the market at this time when the prices are lower. At this time the food is not rotten, but out of fear of being damaged, the sellers offer them at a lower price than at the beginning of the day,\" said Yasmeen Mohamed, a Cairo resident. \"Surely you save a lot of money. In the morning you are able buy a kilogram of onions for five pounds and a kilogram of tomatoes for ten pounds, but now you can buy two kilogrammes of tomato for five pounds and three kilogrammes of onions for ten pounds, which are not rotten,\" she added. According to a report published by UNICEF in 2015, the poverty rate in the country is around 30 percent.
