'Natomas USD: Joey\'s Food Locker'

02:22 Apr 21, 2022
'Joey\'s Food Locker is a win-win venture of the Natomas Unified School District. It solicits food from staff and the community, then distributes it monthly through a district-operated food closet run by students in the Adult Transition Program, which teaches basic living skills -- such as how to write a check or take a bus -- to young adults with mental or physical disabilities. The goal of the transition program is to provide its students with skills they can use to get a job or live independently. Through Joey\'s Food Locker, students 18-22 years old learn about customer service, stocking shelves, bagging groceries, food expiration dates, etc. The food distribution began last year and has grown to serve about 170 people per month.
